Why do dreams and shower thoughts present solutions when brainstorming and SWOT come up ho-hum? How does the presence of mind lead to successes in thinking up new products and generating new ideas?
The concept of “calm insight” might be a factor.
Calm insight is described as the state of mind that lets one see and understand the “flash of insight” – the will–o’-the-wisp, the holy grail of new product or new idea development. The concept of calm insight is not new. Buddhists have for millennium and more prescribed “calm insight” in order to determine next steps. Their teaching states there is a middle path between extremes; this path leads to clear vision, insightful knowledge and clarification.
Those of us who are martial artists see again the foot in two worlds (practical/current and intuition/future). Calm insight isn’t passive… shaolin monks are definitely action oriented, as are product professionals. This time it is action based on insights.
Use shower thoughts to set ideas loose and SWOT to rationalize and align them to strategy.
