Creating Greatness Out of Thin Air – or succeeding without a budget

Influencing without authority. Creating without a budget. Teaming without direct reports. Believing that your [idea, team, product, company] will succeed without a formal structure, a place on the org chart, a bonus, a big company or a friendly banker to back you.

What am I describing?

Heaven or hell, sanity or lack thereof ???????????????????

It depends.

Do you thrive on ambiguity, does challenge spell “opportunity” or OMG?  Is same-o, same-o the kiss or death, or comfortable? Do you believe in the power of the positive?

What gets a Product Professional to Black Belt, besides technical knowledge? I propose it is great leadership skills backed up with negotiation, listening and empathy; add to this a good dose of bottom-line attention to details, and a special thanks to those that provide the facts. In short, a general manager and a business person with a soul.

Why is soul incorporated within the recipe?

A soul cannot be weighed, some say it cannot be found, yet soul is integral. Without soul, I ask where is the purpose? American football knows this. I remember clearly many cheers to my high school team with “soul” as a lyric. Soul can turn a failure to a win. Soul should be top of mind always to the product professional black belt.

I believe we are now ready to learn about leadership.

Why? Tie this back to martial arts, where there is always a tight integration between body, mind and spirit.

Clearly to me mind+spirit = soul. Else then, body and “soul” combined make a perfected business professional. Black and white/positive and negative/male and female; both sides of the whole.

Pil Sung, green belt candidates!
